To my reader and writer friends:
Recent current/political events have been weighing on me. The shaming, the victim blaming, the unacceptable treatment, I just can’t express how it blows my mind.
I work with teenagers who are entering this world of being in relationships and having to make choices and decisions, and I often fear for them. In talking with close friends about our own experiences, I realized how important it is for people to know what consent looks like- not just saying “yes” or “no” but actual conversations, key words, phrases, social cues, body language, all of it. It is just as important to know what consent IS NOT. Assault doesn’t always look like the Lifetime movies or after school specials.
I would like you all to join me in this project on Instagram. I’m going to do a series of photos, excerpts, scenes that show what consent IS and IS NOT through literature. Mine will be from my own writing, but yours could be from any book that fits the bill. Please use the #literaryconsent hashtag, and let’s create a collection of conversations and narratives to illustrate the “yes” and the “no” in all its forms. I will choose several to feature & will send those instagrammers something fun (still thinking what it might be!)
The above excerpt will be part of my re-release of Gem City, titled What Comes of Breaking Promises and Guitar Strings. Ethan Fisher may make a lot of mistakes, but he gets #consent right, every time. .
I feel really strongly about this cause and trying to create conversations that will lead us to a better and safer world. I hope you’ll consider joining in and getting on my soap box with me.
